"We've got 20,000 scientists fishing for ideas in our lake - if there's a fish, then we're going to catch it. The trick is now to go out and cast the line in other people's lakes to find their exciting scientific programs." Jean-Pierre Garnier, CEO GlaxoSmithKline

To make this vision a reality, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has created a small management team whose goal it is to supplement the GSK pipeline with assets developed through external alliances. This team is called the Center of Excellence for External Drug Discovery or CEEDD. In essence, we will "virtualize" a portion of the GSK pipeline; namely, from target to clinical proof of concept, by forming multiple risk/reward-sharing alliances with world-class biotechnology companies. Combining the speed, efficiency and innovation of collaborating companies with GSK’s development and commercialization expertise will bring innovative new products to more patients more quickly.
