Innovation starts small – a light bulb goes off, a bell rings, a single thought rises to the top. A novel discovery produces a new way of understanding disease. An enterprising scientist envisions a new way to treat an old problem and assembles a team of entrepreneurs to test the idea and see if it can become reality.
When it comes to innovation, small is good. But small companies supported by larger ones with R&D and commercialization know how can provide a greater prospect of success. That's what the ceedd is all about.
Welcome to the ceedd of innovation. We're the online voice of the Centre of Excellence for External Drug Discovery (ceedd), founded by GSK in 2005 to help find and support biotechnology companies who are driving scientific discovery and finding new ways to treat and cure disease.
While the size and scope of GSK offers many benefits, we realized early on that innovation happens best on a smaller scale. Since then, the ceedd has been scouting the biotechnology sector, searching for new ideas and promising treatments that can make a real difference in patients' lives, by fulfilling unmet needs. Over time, we've discovered a range of exciting new companies with their fingers on the pulse of therapeutic innovation. Through risk-reward sharing collaborations, GSK has supported many of these companies, helping to foster their innovation and see their vision become a reality.
Since our founding, we've learned a lot. We've seen a lot of innovation and promising new molecules, and we've worked with our alliances to overcome some of the many barriers to success along the way. This forum is dedicated to sharing some of the insights we've gained. Our hope and intention is that these insights will help others who seek to find new ways to treat and cure disease, encouraging them along the way and helping them understand and address issues that may threaten or slow their progress.
The voices here are those of people who are at the front lines of our efforts, including members of our ceedd team and our alliance organizations. We hope our experience and successes will inspire you to keep moving toward your goal and help patients all over the world.
