what is the ceedd?

In a nutshell

We are a small specialized team accountable for delivering molecules with clinical proof of concept into the GSK late-stage development organisation through a network of external alliances with world class biotech companies.

CEEDD Background

Since GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) was formed it has revolutionised its R&D organization, resulting in one of the most impressive pipelines in the industry. GSK has broken away from the traditional model and set up small entrepreneurial drug discovery centers which have the freedom and budget to pursue opportunities that they believe will deliver the best molecules into the development portfolio.

The CEEDD applies this entrepreneurial concept to external drug discovery, by delivering clinical proof of concept molecules into the GSK late-stage development organisation through a portfolio exclusively derived from and managed by independent biotech companies. The CEEDD is focused on gaining access to innovation in science and technology, and in approaches taken to drug discovery. The group specializes in establishing creative and mutually beneficial deal structures to underpin strong and productive alliances.

Strategic Intent

Our intention is to create winning alliances built on trust, openness and mutual incentives, and to leverage the ambition, creativity and talent of our collaborators so that together we can deliver more important Medicines faster to patients.

"At the Center of Excellence for External Drug Discovery, we have a single goal: to support the development of “best from anywhere” science. Our focus is on developing alliances with world-class research and development organisations that, like us, are open to innovation – not just in science, but in all aspects of the discovery process."
Hugh Cowley, Head of the CEEDD
